Since our recent blog post detailing our November income from Amazon, we have had a number of requests from people asking us to provide more detail on what we did to actually achieve that amount of money. So I started to write up a blog post for it last week but it turned into a bit of an epic….I am at over 3000 words so far and I haven’t even scratched the surface.
So we’ve come to the conclusion that it really needs to be put into an ebook. However, we realise that many of you would rather not wait around while we do that and would prefer to get into it and start making money with Amazon as soon as possible. So we have put together this blog post to tell you how we structure our reviews for maximum conversions to help you achieve the same success.
Value First…Money Second
Now many of you who are regulars to this blog will know that I do tend to go on about providing value to your readers. With product reviews it is even more important. If you want to convert your visitors into sales you need to provide as much information as possible to help them make an informed decision as to whether the product you are promoting is the right one for them.
People want to be told what to buy and most don’t want to do the research themselves so they love it when they see a page of content that concisely puts together everything they need to know about that product.
So here are the steps we use for creating quality product reviews that convert. Bear in mind, that at this point we assume you already have a product in mind for review.
Step 1: List the features of the product
The first thing we do with any product we review is to list the features and functions of the product. So say for instance we are going to review the iPod Touch (my favorite toy at the moment) – these would be at least some of the features/functions:
- on/off button
- sound control button
- earphones
- colors available
- technical specifications
- password protection
- battery life
- apps store
- watching videos
- using the internet
- touch screen control
- using email
- itunes
- listening to music
- clock/alarm function
- settings
- Google maps
- calendar function
- contacts function
- notes function
- photos
Try to be as detailed as possible when you are writing up the list, even if it seems trivial. Remember that when buying online, a person can’t physically hold the product so detail is important.
Step 2: Add Content
Now take each of the features/functions in your list, create a heading for each and write a paragraph or two about it. This is where your research comes into play. Remember that you don’t need to own the product to write a good review (although it helps) but you really need to research, research, research. This means scouring the net to see what other people have to say about each of those features. The best place for this is Amazon and in particular the reviews left by real people who actually use the product.
It can also mean contacting the manufacturer for more detailed information.
At this point, you may be thinking that this is all going to take time and just seems a little like hard work….BUT, just remember that you only have to write the review once and it could potentially make you money for years to come.
When writing this sort of content you don’t want to just rehash the features and benefits that can be found on any website. You really want to get into as much detail as possible.
The trick with writing these reviews is not to write it like you are trying to sell something. To start with we wrote a lot of reviews like this and they were really not that effective. Instead we find the best way is to write the review as if you were telling a friend about the product.
Step 3: Add Your Introduction
The goal here is to get your readers to read your entire review and the introduction is critical to that success. You could start your review off by saying “Today I am going to review the iPod Touch…but that’s kind of boring. Instead try using a real life story.
For instance I might write something like: ” When Wanda and I were in the US attending a conference, we happened upon the Apple Store in New York. If you’ve ever been there you’ll know what an experience that is, but we happened to be there the day after the iPhone was released to the world, actually we were on a hop on hop off tourist bus and when the guide pointed out the iPod store – we hopped off.”
I would then go on to say how great I thought the iPhone was but since I didn’t want to buy into a phone plan I waited and eventually ended up buying an iPod Touch instead. That would then lead me straight into the review.
You’d have to agree that it sounds a little more interesting than simply saying “Today we are going to review the iPod Touch”.
Step 4: Add Your Affiliate Links
The final step is to add affiliate links. This simply means finding about three or four spots in your review to add a link. We generally add the first link in the second or third paragraph of our content. So for our iPod Touch review we might add an Amazon link when the phrase ‘iPod Touch’ first appears in the second paragraph.
The second link may appear somewhere around the middle and the third right at the end of the review. This final link would be part of a sentence that tells the reader where they can purchase the product. You can do this in a couple of ways:
- Provide a list of merchants who sell the product so that the reader can do their own price comparison. Note that you wouldn’t actually add the prices here as they can change and you would be forever updating the page – just list the merchant names and a link to each.
- Provide one link to one merchant – we always use Amazon as they generally have the best prices.
Although we do use both options, we tend to go with the second option more often as Amazon convert extremely well for us.
Some final tips…
- Although you want to be completely honest with your review, you don’t want to focus too heavily on the negatives….after all, your goal is to make sales. To avoid this, try and choose products that get excellent ratings so you don’t have to worry about the negatives.
- Don’t ever make things up. In other words, don’t say the product is good when it clearly isn’t. Your goal is to get your readers to trust your opinion. And don’t say you have the product if you don’t. Your readers will pick up on this sort of thing and you will lose their trust.
And finally…
One thing to remember is that a majority of the reviews on the net are of poor quality and lack the detail that most people look for in a good review. Just try and add as much value as you can to your reviews and you will be streets ahead of the rest of them.
Looking forward to reading your e-book on this topic. Very good information you got here so far!
Thanks for visiting Stefan. Hopefully the ebook won’t be too far away. It’s just a matter of finding the time to complete it.
This is a great, very informative post on review writing. I haven’t done too many of them because I wasn’t sure how to do it correctly and I didn’t want to sound pushy. Thanks so much for posting this. :)

Awesome post. Of course, now I want the ebook. ;) I’m never satisfied.
Thanks for these tips. I’ve added a few affiliate links in my blog lately, but I think I still can do it better.
I am excited to start my own product site soon. Thanks again for the information and inspiration.

I think I will be making the ebook my priority. We have so many people wanting to learn how to do this. When people find out how much they can earn from this business they get all keen. We have lots of family and friends who want one-on-one training but it’s difficult to teach that many people without neglecting our own business. So the ebook needs to be done I think.
What a wonderful post! I’m bookmarking it right now!. Thanks so much.

Excellent tips Paula, and I too will wait patiently for the ebook to arrive. If you seek proofreaders/idea bouncers, let me know if I can help.
I’ve heard from more then a few people that do excellent reviews, that video whenever applicable works WONDERS in reviews.

I look forward to your eBook. Your information is always incredibly helpful.
I’m working on the ebook as we speak. It’s going to be quite detailed as I want it to be useful for both beginners and those who have been around for some time.
Hi Paula,
Thanks for the post – great info. I can see that you always recommend on Amazon. Don’t they pay really a low commission rate?
Amazon pay anywhere from 4% to 8.5%. It just depends on how many products you sell each month. We regularly hit 8.25%.
Amazon also has amazing conversion rates. If they go to Amazon, they’re very likely to buy. Plus, they are upsell experts. When was the last time you went to Amazon and only bought what you planned to buy? You get the commissions on the whole order, not just the original click-through. Amazon is great!
That’s so true Julie Anne. Most of the products we sell have nothing to do with the products that we promote on our websites.
Excellent post!
This is so true – It’s way much more interesting reading a story than being set up for “Today we are going to review product x!”
You also mentioned one of the most important pieces of all that can sometimes be overlooked – Does a merchant have high conversions or not? It’s easy to get caught up on commission rate and cookie durations and not consider – Conversion Rate!
Thanks …Wish you the best!
Robert
.-= Robert Avila´s last blog ..Tony Robbins Interviews – John Reese, Frank Kern & Eben Pagan =-.
Exactly Robert. We just weren’t converting with a lot of our merchants. It was only when we moved to Amazon that our conversion rate shot through the roof.
When you put in an Amazon link, do you do it for Amazon US or for a local Amazon?
.-= Pearson Brown´s last blog ..Some random thoughts on forums =-.
We use Amazon US but I don’t think it would matter what country you use. I just find that in the US they are more confident to buy online so it’s more likely you will get a sale.
Found you via “Code my Own Road”… will certainly hang around a while! Thanks.
Thanks for visiting Michelle. Hope you enjoy your stay.
Hello Wanda and Paula, Great Blog! Congrats for having your story on max blog press. I am a full time IM’er as well and agree that you need to provide value to people first, then the income follows.

Thanks for your comments Randal. I just took a look at your site…very nice.
I just have one suggestion…just my thoughts so ignore it if you like, but I just thought that you might improve your click through rate by adding a READ MORE link at the bottom of each post.
I know you have a MORE link but it is hard to see. A much larger and bolder READ MORE link might grab peoples attention and force them to click through to Amazon.
Hi Paula and Wanda,
Thanks for the post. I have several product review posts, but will use your advise and jazz them up. Some other super affiliates like to tell stories as their hook, and since I have used most of the products I sell, I can definitely tell how the product helped me, in addition to the features.
With Blessings,
Ken Weiss
It always helps if you own the product as you can really make it personal. People love it if they know you own the product and they are more likely to trust your opinion.

.-= royal´s last blog ..How to Find an Auto Car Loan =-.
Yes, it’s all about the traffic. No point having a really good review without any traffic. So spend as much time as possible working on traffic building and backlinking.
Hey Paula,
Do you use raw affiliate links in the post or do you mask them with (for example) something like a PHP redirect?
We don’t use any redirects. We just write a review and add affiliate text links within the review.
I personally would like to see a sample review for me to study and see how you would do it. That way I can apply what I’ve studied into my own review.
Great article nonetheless but I would like a sample.
Some good examples of how a review should be written can be found on the review pages at http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/ and http://www.cnet.com/. Look for reviews that are long and detailed giving lots of product information. Its the well written content and informative details that help your visitors to decide to buy.
I started Amazon affiliate marketing last year but gave it up for a while. Just starting off again and was just thinking about improving my conversions and writing better reviews. I was about to come here and ask for an example myself but you beat me too it, thanks Wanda.
Thanks for the solid information. With this new MayDay mayhem from Google I believe it has become more important than ever to separate yourself from the others.
It appears that Google is making quick work of the thin content, one theme fits all sites, not to mention scraped content. Writing a thorough 500-1000 word review sets your site apart from the rest. And I believe it will also set your business apart from the rest as well.
Thanks for writing this and best of success in the months to come!
Yes I think Google are really pushing for quality content. But that’s a good thing I think. All the better for the rest of us that are producing good content.
Do you add a picture of the product and if so do you make it a clickable affiliate link?
Yes we do add an image and we make it a clickable affiliate link. I think a picture is definitely necessary as some people are more visual than others.
Hi Paula. Thanks for the wonderful and detailed post. I have limited success with Amazon but looking to do more. Did you ever finish your ebook on the subject?
Cheers

We’re working on it Inger. I am hoping it will be out within the next 3 or 4 weeks. If you sign up to our newsletter you will be the first to know.
Hi Paula
I just stumbled upon your site and its a great resource so thanks so much for sharing. Its fortunate I came across this blog because I am still trying to make it with about 10 sites of mine and my model is starting with amazon but was planning on going to dropshipping but not so sure now. At this point none of my product sites have stayed in the top 3 of google for long enough for me to know your kind of success…..I know now how to confirm my keyword traffic through adwords and actually have 2 full time SEO staff in the philippines (1 new guy 4 weeks ago) but my sites are jumping all over the place back and forth in last month or two. Most are 3-4 months old. We started with link wheels and now profiles and UAW. Now I have changed tac and decided we are going to focus on 4 sites mainly on profiles, fresh daily content and UAW. Does it sound like I am on the right track? I just dont know whats happening with the SEO side, I outsource SEO and have a great guy but am wondering whether we have been running too hot on links as I am surprised we are not ranking yet……
Thanks so much and great to hear a fellow aussie doing so well online!
Cheers
Manny
Google has done some major changes lately so your sites could be caught up in that.
Try not to think too much about where you are ranking. I know that’s hard to do but if you just keep doing what you’re doing it will eventually settle down and your rankings will be a little more stable. Your sites are still relatively new so rankings will fluctuate constantly.
Paula,
As per usual your comments are always useful and practical. Much appreciated. When you link to Amazon in your content how are you doing it? Are you logged into you Amazon affiliate account when you link to a particular product so you can be credited for the sale or how are you doing it? Thanks.
We use text links to link to Amazon. We don’t use widgets. We found they don’t work as well as simple text links.
You need to log into Amazon Affiliates to get the text links. You can register for Amazon Affiliates here – https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/
Hello I have been following your blog for few days on the way to develop an affiliate business site in one of my sub-domain. Now some questions are in my mind such as:
a) do I need to find an affiliate site builder program?
b) is this program free? If not would you please gimme info of a free one.
I made few sites using wordpress CMS but what I found the affiliate sites are different in getup; such as the reviews generally provides ratings and also comparison between many products where user has to choose the products from the list to get the detailed comparison. Are these done by wordpress plugins or by site builder program?
Finally thumbs up to your honest work.
I’m not sure what you mean by affiliate site builder program so I’ll just answer no to that one.
We mostly use Amazon. You need to register with them first – it’s free – and once registered you add affiliate links to your website. You can sign up with Amazon here – https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/
You can use Amazon plugins like ReviewAzon and WPZon Builder to add products to your website but if you do use these it’s best to change the content that comes over from Amazon so the content is unique.
I agree with you that changing the Amazon content to make it unique is a good idea. However, isn’t there something in Amazon’s TOS prohibiting any changes to their content?
What we normally do with these plugins is only use the images, title and links through to Amazon. We then add our own product review underneath that. So we aren’t technically changing the content because we didn’t bring it over from Amazon to begin with.
Hi,
Thanx alot for this post. You’ve pretty much solved problems I’ve been having concerning writing product reviews. THANX A MILLION!
Hey Paula,
If you don’t mind me asking, what type of link building do you guys focus on for your Review sites?
Thanks
Anthony
Our main method for link building is to offer articles to other websites. In the articles we add a few links back to our product review pages. We don’t really use article directories – we focus more on other bloggers and just regular websites when we submit the articles. The links are a lot stronger. If you are going to submit to article directories then stick with ezinearticles.com and articlebase.com.
Hi Paula,
On your reviews, do you put a text link or a link showing the pic with the Amazon info?
I am experimenting with both, but as an experienced Amazon affiliate, I am interested in which tends to convert better for you?
Thanks, Ken
I assume you mean using an Amazon ‘click here’ type image link..yes?
If so we have used those but we pretty much only use text and image links. So we will have the main product picture at the top with an Amazon link behind it and then a number of text links throughout the review.
To be honest we haven’t done a lot of split testing so haven’t been able to compare the two.
Hello Ladies,
My partner and I found you in the Warrior Forum. You have given a lot of great info. We are in the process of creating an affiliate site based on your model. I completely understand everything you suggested in writing a review that converts. There is just one bit I am not sure how to do properly. You said to start the review with a personal story. My problem is we do not own the product we want to sell. How do I incorporate a story with a product we don’t personally own.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Becky
This is going to be the subject of our next blog post. We’re just in the process of releasing our ebook on how to promote Amazon products so we are a bit behind with our blog posts but it should be up next week.
You might want to read this one first:

I did read that and realized that I was actually doing that already. In fact I have done that with the products I have actually tried. It is this one last thing that I am working to figure out.

Hi Wanda & Paula,
I am wondering what are the importance in having your keyword in your domain? Thanks for the many advises you gals had given.
We personally don’t worry too much about getting just the right domain name. If you can get the keyword in the domain name that’s great but we don’t worry too much if we can’t.
Hello Wanda & Paula,
I’m a newbie to Affiliate Marketing, and I had no idea on how to write product reviews, but after visiting your blog I found the answers I’ve been looking for thanks a bunch for all your tips and suggestions.
Lois!
Thanks for visiting Lois. Glad we could help.
Creating effective Amazon blogs is a lot about content but also important how you link to the products.
Are you using text-links or also linking images? And if so, do you copy and paste the images or download them first?
Hi John
We use both text links and image links. I tend to copy the image from Amazon to my computer, then upload them to the review and add the links after. This gives me a nice clear 300×300 image and I don’t need to worry about resizing images.
Just check out our ‘How to’ about this at this link:
http://www.affiliateblogonline.com/2008/12/31/how-to-add-an-amazon-image-link-to-a-wordpress-blog-post/ this
Hi Paula,
I’ve just finished writing one product review..it took lil time to research and be an expert without a portfolio lol :D …for me its like a KILLER review..and in coming few days i’ll be done with writing stuffs BUT…being a non-english person i still lack some quality catchy lines which would boost my conversions. And having amazon cookie valid for only 24 hrs I would like my customers to take out their credit card instantly and purchase the product..ehehe indeed every affiliates likes that…
So, can I get some killer pick up lines that i could add just before amazon product link.
I know its unethical but how about adding real life picture of someone else as a reviewer…preferably a middle-aged women to gain more trust from visitors..?? Any risk involved??
Huge Risk..
This is something I would not do Ranzyt. You really want to build up credibility in your work.
Just think about the future – if you misrepresent yourself in the beginning, what happens when you have a great many followers and then you have to reveal yourself for whatever reason. You will immediately lose all credibility and trust.
Be true to yourself, follow the plan, write excellent worthwhile content and represent yourself as who you are.
First things first..warm greetings ma’am.
Ok i understood its all about credibility and trust. Although I’ve researched a lot about the product and its benefits, i’m stalled…how I present myself in a review? Will visitors trust a 25 yr old blogger who doesnt own the product.
First of all, age has nothing to do with it and you don’t need to reveal your age on your blog. We don’t.
You have our ebook so follow the style we use in the example review. If you have studied the product and know everything about it, then you should be able to write a helpful reader.
We found that using killer pick up lines or gimmicky tricks does not work with Amazon Products. We simply rely on writing naturally, honestly and with integrity.
To do well online you don’t need all the hype. Customers are looking for reviews that are informative and if you stick to the formula your product reviews will convert.
So no need for punchy pick up lines, just keep it honest and stick to our plan.
Hi Wanda & Paula
Thanks a bunch for your insightful posts – I have been around quite a bit in online marketing, but never did much with Amazon, until recently.
The strategies you outline here and having a close look at your most successful sites has helped me a lot!
One question: when you chose the actual products, do you care if they are shipped by Amazon or a 3rd party? I just had the case that a high-priced item sold on one of my sites – nothing showed up in my earnings report for several weeks, and when I contacted Amazon support they told me that according to the seller the order had been cancelled. Which you can believe – or not. No way to find out unless you know the person who ordered it.
What are your experiences? Higher rate of cancellations/returns with 3rd party or no difference?
No we don’t care whether they are 3rd party or not. We’ve never really had any issues and haven’t noticed any difference between them.
I guess there is always the likelihood of the seller not doing the right thing but we really don’t worry about it.
Fantastic tips on writing a solid review. In a nutshell: list the features and elaborate on them, adding a few text links to Amazon. A simple and powerful formula. Thanks. :)
The key is elaborating on those features. There is no point simply listing features since the reader can find those anywhere. You have to let them know how those features benefit them.
Hello Wanda and Paula,
This is one great detailed information I had ever come across on writing reviews. Even I like to buy things through the link that provide the best information. And, so is everybody.I agree with you that quality is what differentiate success and failure while writing a review.
I have a quick question here, when you add your affiliate links using the first option (list of merchants), do we have to be an affiliate for all the merchants. Sometime it can be a long list of merchants selling the same product. wouldn’t that disoriented our earning?
Thank you.
Joel
You don’t have to be affiliates with all the merchants but you obviously won’t get any commission for the sale if you aren’t.
We generally only provide one merchant and that is just about always Amazon. However, on pages where we provide more than one we usually only offer no more than 3. Too many options is not good – people get confused and often won’t buy anything.
I have spent the last few hours reading your blog. I was an avid reader anyway but I really read through the archives and such. You provide such great information, it’s no wonder you ladies are such a success. Quality = sales. Good job!
It’s definitely all about ‘quality’. It was a long hard road for us to finally realise that but it really works when you focus on quality rather than quantity.
You have always being a source of inspiration to me on warrior forum. I read some of your replies to posts and decided to take some steps. I made $55 last month (though very little) but I know I’m on the right track.
If I may ask, what’s your take on hubpages….I hear a lot of amazon affiliate marketers reccommend hubpages?
Tunde from Nigeria
Hubpages, Squidoo pages and so on are okay to use. We’ve used them ourselves in the past and you can make money with them. The only problem you might have with them is that you don’t have the control that you would have if you had your own website. So at anytime they could shut you down or they might change their policy to not include affiliate links and so on. So it’s always best if you can have your own website wherever possible.
How do you write a product review without buying the product?
You might want to read this article we wrote on that:
http://www.affiliateblogonline.com/2010/06/22/how-to-write-a-product-review-when-you-dont-own-the-product/
Thanks for this post. I’ve found it very informative.
I would add one more thing: video.
There are lots of useful product reviews on youtube, and in my experience people like them. I always add video reviews (if there is one available) to my posts when promoting amazon products.
I must admit I’ve never been a big fan of video. Generally if I find a page on the net that only has a video on it and no text I always click the back button.
However, I know a lot of people love them so they can add to a product review. It always helps if you can do your own review as well if you do actually own the product.
Thank you for a very helpful article.
The biggest problem that I’ve run into is products that are no longer available. For example, at Christmas, I stumbled on a hot product and wrote up a tidbit about it. The product sold out quickly and I can’t find a replacement anywhere. (I’ve checked all the major networks.) I’m still getting traffic to the page, but now surfers are disappointed because they get to a page that says “Product No Longer Available.” How do you deal with this issue? Thank you.
This can be a problem. One of our most successful products was out of stock for about three months.
You can handle this in a couple of different ways:
1. Replace all the content on the page with another similar product. You would only do this if you knew that the product you are currently promoting is no longer being manufactured. So you would need to contact the manufacturer first.
2. If you know the product will eventually be back in stock then you can simply had a note at the top of your review page that says something like this: “This product is currently unavailable. However, you might like to take a look at this product (insert link here) which also receives excellent ratings by consumers etc etc”
Thanks ladies for the excellent tips on writing a better review… I agree with Tommy about the videos – some people like to see the product in action, either just close ups to get a better look at it or an actual demonstration.
And sometimes it can be difficult to describe a specific aspect of a product in words so a video can help in that situation.
Some really good tips in here. I think people can sense, when they’re reading a review on a site, whether or not the site owner has their best interest at heart or if they just threw it together to try and make a buck..
I agree. Our old reviews were just thrown together really without much thought. It was all about getting people to click through to Amazon back then and it just didn’t work.
Hi Paula!
I found your blog on The Warrior Forum. I am loving all of the great tips for product reviews. I am still learning how to do a review site that converts well. I am making some money from affiliate sales as an Amazon Associate, but no where near where I want to be. So, I have my work cut out for me.
Thanks again for the tips. I will be looking forward to your ebook when it comes out.
Elizabeth
Our ebook is already out Elizabeth. It’s the Amazonian Profit Plan.
LOL :) I realized that after I submitted this post. Thank you. I will definitely check it out!
Hi Paula, Hi Wanda,
I´ve got a question that´s just like a total cliffhanger to me. ´m sorry for going maybe a bit offtopic here but i really have to aks it.
here it comes:
in the Warrior Forum, where i found you and finally followed you to this blog, i also read a Thread about a 60 Day experiment where Terry Kelly worked on 5 Articles for over 3 months before they ranked anywhere near “aceptable”.
How long do you usually work on a review before it hits page 1 on google oder even rank1 on page 1.
I know it may vary from time to time but is there any average timespan you can tell me?
You must know i´m mostly new to all of this IM stuff and i just try to collect trustable information from professionals like you, just to find out which path i should choose for my self to make money on the internet.
Thank you in advance for taking the time and keep up the good work, you are great!
Mateo
Unfortunately there is no average in this business. It could take a week to rank on the first page or it could take a year or it might even take longer than that. There are so many variables to take into account – the products you choose, the competition, what sort of backlinking you do, how much time you put into it, the sites that your backlinks are placed on, whether Google decides to change their algorithm, the keywords you are trying to rank for…and I’m sure there’s more that I just can’t think of right now.
The main problem with this business is that there are no absolutes. No one can give you specific time frames and even providing averages is a bit suspect because there really is no average. If we want to be real about this, most people who attempt this business make nothing or only a few dollars here and there. That is the average but of course we don’t want to know that because we are all trying to make a living from this and we don’t want to see the negatives.
I know I’ve gotten sidetracked a little here but what I’m trying to get at is that in order to succeed in this business try to stay focused on what you are doing and not what others are doing because you won’t be able to replicate anyone else’s success. Just because they made a full-time living in just 2 months doesn’t mean you will – you could do it in 1 month or it could take you 5 years.
You just have to know that if you stick with it you will make it eventually. Just focus on providing value and working smarter not harder. And above all be patient…it won’t happen overnight but it will happen.
Thanks for the very fast reply Paula, it was indeed helpful to me.
I just would like to aks you one more question. it´s about backlinking.
I´ve read, that you and Wanda mostly do it via Article Hosting on other Blogs.
I´m in the dating advice business (in german language) right now and there aren´t so many juicy blogs on the net for that niche – do you have an good advice how i should backlink in that case. should i go for blogs with irrelevant content to my site and ask for a guest article slot with a dofollow link then?
Sorry for the offtopic, I just really am very interested in your advice on this one.
thank you,
Mateo
When you look for sites to submit articles to you generally avoid the ones that are in the exact same niche as you. The reason for that is they will see you as the competition and probably won’t take an article.
Instead look for related sites. In your case you might look for sites that target specifically men or specifically women. So when searching in Google try typing in the words “men articles” or “women articles” and see what sites come up.
Wow,
for you, this information may seem obvious but for me as the freshman it´s like pure gold to learn from a more advanced person like you.
So this really helped me thanks for taking the time and replying on this one.
Mateo
Paula,
I have completed some research on some google product searches and have a couple of products I think I’m going to pursue. However, there are many options on amazon. Do I choose just one brand that has high ratings and sales averages and go with that one? If my visitor clicks my link and goes to Amazon but chooses another brand or item – do I lose my commission?
That’s the beauty of Amazon. If someone goes to Amazon and decides not to buy the item you sent them there for but instead buys another you still get the commission for that other item.
Thank you for sharing this blog post. This is just the information I was looking for to make good product reviews. The one thing that I didn’t think about was making the list of features when writing review. Now I know…
It does help when you start by listing the features and then work from there. The problem is that a lot of people will only ever list the features in their review and not expand on them or state what the benefits of those features are. Anyone can get a list of features for a product – what they want to see is what those features will do for them.
Hi Paula,
could you share with us that how do you write 1000 word reviews of a product you don’t own?
Apologize me if my question been asked before. Thanks.
You might want to read the following blog posts which will help. It all comes down to doing the research.

Nice post !!!
It make me realize that why people are not converting on my review site, because i was lacking all these things. I am making short reviews. I am on the firts page on a keyword having good visitors per month but sales are nada.
Thanks for sharing need to re-think the strategy.
Well you are in a great position to start making some good money from that page simply by reworking that review.
hi,
Can you please take a look at my product review blog?(http://webproductreview.blogspot.com?)
I have a few suggestions for you:
1. Remove the extra white space between your paragraphs. It makes your site look unprofessional. You have quite a number of large gaps of white space between paragraphs and between posts. Tidy that up a bit and your site will look a lot better.
2. Start focusing on just a few reviews on your website instead of constantly adding more. Pick three reviews for products that you know are really good quality products – these can be reviews you already have on your site. Rework those reviews until they are the best reviews on the net for those products. Make them long and helpful to the reader. Then spend the rest of your time getting backlinks to those 3 reviews until they are ranking in the number 1 spots in Google for as many keywords as possible.
3. Add images to your product reviews. Most people need to see an image of what they are buying before they will buy.
Thanx alot Paula
This will be of great help! One question, what are your thoughts on writing reviews on products you don’t actually own, but think are really cool?
Any thoughts?
We do it all the time Ken. It’s impossible to buy every single product you review. The trick is to the research thoroughly. You don’t want to make stuff up and you don’t want to promote products that aren’t of good quality so research is the key.
Have a read of these posts as well. They may help:

This one is a gem of an article. I have spent far too much time and money creating reviews and not focusing on the “detail” aspect of it; I bet I have lost many sales doing this.
Tell me about Silvano, we did exactly the same thing. We have hundreds of poorly written reviews out there that aren’t converting.
Great blog and lots of good information. I was actually sent to this site by one of my clients who wanted his Amazon reviews written in your format. I love the idea of not being so “in your face” with the marketing of Amazon products and will certainly try this method you are so successful with.
I am excited about receiving your newsletter as well. Thanks again. Women Entrepreneurs Rock!
Being a little more subtle with the marketing of Amazon products definitely works. I think a good majority of people online are becoming quite savvy about picking out overly hyped product reviews. They just want a review that is real and helpful so they can make a decision as to whether to buy or not.
I follow your posts .. and … now begin to open up about what you’ve managed to do .. but .. still many who do not I understand .. maybe I should buy your ebook .. tanks .. very much for your sincerity. ..
Hi Paula and Wanda, I have read all comments and all questions which your visitors asked you answered. I know that you use images from amazon and put affiliate links on them but If I also download the image from Amazon and upload them to my blog and make them affiliate links than will it be legal if I use Google Adsense on that blog?
I heard that Google Adsense don’t allow images taken from Amazon and If we did it than Adsense will ban us?
Where did you hear that Google Adsense doesn’t allow images from Amazon?
It’s common and everyone knows that Google Adsense needs original content with original images, not copyrighted. If we download images from Amazon and upload them on our blog than It will be copyright right?
I’ve never heard of that before Ehsan. How would Google Adsense even know that an image from your site comes from Amazon?
Hello Paula and Wanda…
You ladies have been online succeeding for quite some time. It is always a great learning experience when I read anything that either of you may write about.
I wonder, if you have time, would you share your method for determining your visitor profile? I know that to write really great content that is truly valuable to your visitor you need to write specifically for a clear image of your visitor.
As a student of this industry, which I will always be, I’m really searching for a step by step system that will help me develop such a profile. I would like to put a photo of a person on my desk and then write precisely for that one person! My hope, of course, is that there will be many others out there that will fit into this profile mold!
Marketing is NOT about selling products or services… it is rather the “Art of solving problems”! The more problems you solve, the more sales and loyal followers.
You write post after post almost intuitively knowing what your readers need to read and learn to improve their online success.
You must have a system… will you share it?
Cheers from Boston!

Actually we don’t have a system John. I think we write for ourselves if that makes sense. The articles we end up with are articles that we ourselves would like to read. We have never sat down to analyze who our audience is or what they would like to see.
In my view, I think it is better to write for yourself than for someone else. Anyone who is interested in what you have to say will keep coming back.
I think also with this blog, can write with a certain empathy for those that are still struggling as we have been through it all ourselves.
Thanks for the tips- they are straight to the point and I follow most of them – although I so not make too much out of these reviews I use them for traffic improvement also. I am careful also to chose nice, quality pictures for the products that I review.
Hi Paula & Wanda,
There’s a product that I think is great and want to write a review about. It’s rated very high on Amazon and other places as well. The only problem is that for several of the most important keywords related to this product, the very first result on Google is a forum where loads of people say nothing but bad things about it. Some totally bash the product and have long explanations of why they think it’s bad. How would you handle this situation? Do you think it’s still worth writing a review about?
What I would do is check if their opinions are actually valid. If they are then I probably wouldn’t review the product only because we only like to review really good quality products.
If their opinions aren’t valid then I would go with writing the review and I would try and dispel some of the things they have said on the forum.
